STEP 2

Determine Your Eligibility

If your application is preliminarily accepted, you will be contacted by our Donor Coordinator to set up a Test Donation Appointment at our Berkeley location.  We are looking for men with higher than average sperm counts...More »

If your first test donation (sperm sample) is found to meet the lab's minimum requirements, you will be invited to schedule an Intake Appointment to determine your eligibility to be a sperm donor.

At the Intake Appointment, you will meet with our Donor Coordinator who will describe the donor screening process in detail and take a brief family history. You will leave another sperm sample at this appointment.

If your two test donations meet our lab's minimum eligibility requirements (the sperm counts are above average), you will be invited into Phase 2, the Screening & Testing portion of the donor screening program.

STEP 3

Screening & Testing

During  Phase 2, donor applicants are expected to make once-a-week appointments in the lab to leave a sperm sample. When you visit our lab, you will provide a sperm sample by masturbating alone in a comfortable, private room...More »

To have the best chance of providing an acceptable (high sperm count) sample, you need to abstain from ejaculating for 3 days (72 hours) before providing each sample. If you do not have at least 3 days of abstinence, your sperm sample will not meet the lab's requirements. More than 4 days of abstinence is not recommended.

In addition to producing one sample a week, other steps during this phase include the following:

  • You will have lab appointments for STI testing and genetic carrier screening.

  • You will complete a detailed personal and family health history form which will be reviewed with you by a genetic counselor.

  • You will write a personal narrative and provide a baby photo.

  • You will have multiple interviews with our Healthworkers.

  • You will have a medical examination.

During this phase, check payments are provided at various steps. If you pass the Screening and Testing Phase and are approved to be a Program Donor, you will be paid retroactively for all of the acceptable sperm samples that you provided in Phase 2.
